About The Vegetarian Society
Founded in 1847, The Vegetarian Society is one of the UK’s most established charities and a respected authority in promoting vegetarian living. Alongside education, advocacy and consumer awareness, the organisation provides accreditation services that help manufacturers and brands validate products against recognised vegetarian and plant-based standards.
With growing demand for transparent food labelling and ethical consumer choices, The Vegetarian Society needed a more efficient way to manage accreditation requests, ingredient reviews and client communication at scale. Their digital transformation project focused on modernising internal processes while improving the experience for businesses applying for certification.
Technologies Used
The platform was built using a modern, scalable tech stack to ensure performance, flexibility and future growth. React.js was used for the frontend to deliver a fast, responsive user experience, while Laravel powers the backend with robust, secure application logic. MySQL underpins the data layer, enabling efficient management of products, ingredients and accreditation workflows. The architecture has been designed with API-first principles, allowing for future integrations and the introduction of advanced capabilities such as AI-driven automation.

Our Process
Requirements
The Vegetarian Society required a platform that removed repetitive manual admin and reduced delays in the accreditation journey. Businesses needed a clear self-service portal where they could submit products, manage ingredients and track progress.
Internally, the Society needed a faster way to assess submissions, manage client accounts, review ingredient suitability and communicate decisions. Accuracy, speed and transparency were essential, particularly as application numbers continue to rise.
Solutions
chilliapple designed and developed a bespoke web-based accreditation management platform with separate experiences for external clients and internal administrators.
Businesses can securely log in, add products, upload ingredients, request vegetarian, vegan or plant-based accreditation, and monitor progress through an intuitive dashboard. Internally, administrators can review submissions, assess ingredients using colour-coded logic, assign workloads, manage accounts and issue approvals or rejections efficiently.
The platform was also architected with future AI capability in mind. As ingredient databases grow and submission volumes increase, the system can support intelligent automation such as ingredient recognition, smart product matching, anomaly detection, automated document reading, and AI-assisted recommendations to speed up the accreditation process while keeping human oversight in place.
Built using React.js, Laravel and MySQL, the solution gives The Vegetarian Society a modern, scalable platform that improves current operations while creating a strong foundation for future AI-led efficiencies and innovation.
Results
The Vegetarian Society now benefits from a centralised digital platform that modernises a previously manual accreditation process. Submission handling is faster, communication is clearer and internal teams have greater visibility across workloads and product pipelines.
Most importantly, the organisation now has a scalable digital foundation capable of supporting future growth, new certification services and a significantly improved customer experience for partner brands seeking accreditation.
